about

The live album signifies an almost quixotic quest in the realm of recorded music. As much as it encodes sound, it touches at a vivid set of circumstances: time, place, and movement, fabric of identities in a now evaporated atmosphere. And with most, there are no cosmetic coverings; whatever the performance brings is what you leave with. This space, this challenge for authenticity and uninterrupted presence, has motivated artists across genre and generation. It is here that we have re-discovered Natedal: on a summer night in Williamsburg, NY, in a room where people across the city have gathered to experience music unlike any other.

With 'The Scholes Street Sessions,' Natedal marks an ambitious return to live performance only six months after their founding. Between January and June 2019, the dynamic creativity first established in the time of 'Predisposed' faced challenging constraints -- but with resourcefulness and persistence, creative seeds were sown and transformed the group anew. In 'Scholes,' one hears a courageousness and unabashed experimentation only possible when improvisatory channels have completely cleared. 'The Scholes Street Sessions' reveal a Natedal that is strikingly mature and self-aware, striving to push at the very limits of its own semantics and theatricality, but never losing sight of its essential emotional core. As the compositions and improvisations morph in real time, one witnesses spontaneous meditations on family, love, abuse, and materiality -- travels through the inner home of the mind to the vastness of outer space -- all as Natalie, Eden, and Aliya find and lose and find each other again.

This live recorded performance is a powerful frame: capturing an ephemeral moment of music and feeling created by these artists, its reverberatings and responses experienced by both performer and audience. In 'Scholes', the ascending trajectory of Natedal's unique configuration and subsequent sound makes itself exceedingly clear -- leaving us in searing anticipation for what new musical frontiers this group has yet to expose.
